The score was close enough that it was still possible for the Bandstand Band and the Cheersquad to keep the crowd pumped for the second half. Brodi Andrews and Faige Harrison with the piccalos, Donovan Taffer on the bass drum, Cassandra Finch on the clarinet who no doubt was enduring hours of ‘one time at band camp’ jokes, Eddie Brunts on his tuba, they worked the crowd while the cheerleaders took their spot mid-field.
“Too hot too touch, the Mustang’s are too much!
Too H-O-T T-O, T-O-U-C-H!” The music was borrowed, but the cheer/dancing were original. The squad learned the moves pretty quick, having to improvise with two cheerleaders down. Peyton filled in Mia’s spot, it was the good part about being a floater. Ar took care of the tumble routines. Sondra had a few second solo in the middle where she got to show off some of her ballet moves, while Peyton and Lauren - the blonde bookends showed off some toe touch jumps, backflips, scorpions and heel stretches.
"I told you this was going to be a fight!" Coach Armstrong sharply reminded his team as they stood looking war-torn in the locker room. He’d gathered both sides - boys and girls in the boys side. "They're not just going to hand you the win! Is that what you're waiting for? You're expecting them to say 'hey Mustangs, here you go!' It's not going to happen!" A couple of snickers from the team were cut short by the Coach's stern glare.
"Well they won't, but you can take it from them! You're in range, you're getting close, but close doesn't count! Keep your eyes open. We spend a boatload of time on footwork, evasion, you think I'm doing that because I want to see you dance? Hell no! The only dancing I want to see is if Masters makes it into the end zone.” That comment brought out a few laughs, and this time the Coach let them go on. It was time to change the tone.
“You're six points out,” he continued. “You have two quarters to make it up and hold them off, but it's not going to be easy. When you go out there again you keep that in mind. They aren't giving you an inch, so you take one from them! Do not let them push you around!”
“Not a chance!” called out defensive captain Guillermo Espinosa, followed by cries of assent from the rest of the team. The Coach nodded in approval before wrapping up.
“So hydrate up, do what you need to and just know you have two quarters left, and the Warhawks know you are not about to let up. When you go back out there, you let them know the Mustangs don't just hand over games either! You go back out there and show them that no one is going to bully us.”
