"Right here!" Peyton said with a smile, grabbing the clipboard and pen from her bed. She was glad Lauren reconsidered. "I'm gonna go talk to Coach Kerry tomorrow and tell her we got eight, possibly more, which more than shows an interest, don't it?" Peyton didn't wait for the skater to respond before continuing. "I think I'm gonna just take all the uniforms in the store room to be dry cleaned and then hold a meeting sometime this week, if I can get gym time, and then I'll hand them out. You'll come right?" Since finding another note under the door looking for a good time (cheer griefers!) she was a little worried about people maybe not showing up. Lauren took a breath in to say something, but Peyton continued. "I'm not really sure what day it'll be, but I'm gonna let everyone know s'soon as I have a date. It's going to be super fun, just wait and see! Thanks Lauren!" Peyton could have hugged her, but she wasn't sure how under control Lauren had the whole fire thing. and thanks to Kayla Culepepper, Peyton knew Paul Mitchell hair spray ignited real easy. "I'll see you then, okay?" This time Peyton waited for a response. Lauren smiled and nodded her head.
"Sounds good." Her fellow blonde said before turning to head back to her quad.
Eight! Coach Armstrong would have to say yes to eight.
Spirit? Let's Hear it! (OPEN)
If cheerleading was easy, they'd call it football.
Re: Spirit? Let's Hear it! (OPEN)
This time, when Peyton knocked on Coach Kerry’s door, there was no tentativeness about it.. Eight names, including hers. Peyton, Sondra, Mia, Lauren, Wyatt, Jeremy, Ar and Etienne. Whatever their reasons were, they were willing to give it a shot.. It wouldn’t be for competitions and for trophies, for rankings or recognition. For the first time in a long time? It was going to be about fun, about school spirit, about belonging. Come hell or high water, it would be fun.
Coach Kerry offered a warm smile when she saw Peyton, waving the teen in and indicating for her to take a seat.
“Peyton! What a surprise.” She began facetiously, as Peyton handed the clipboard to her. “Eight? Well, that’s an interest all right. Somehow, I didn’t think you’d have a problem, so I took the liberty of speaking to Coach Armstrong already. Congrats, Peyton. Westbrook has a cheer squad- intramural.”
“I understand, I understand.” Peyton replied, trying not to let the word itself dampen her mood. “If nothing else, maybe we can pull it together enough to cheer for some intramural games. Football, basketball. Be set for homecoming in September.”
“One step at a time.” the coach reminded her with another smile. “For now, Coach Armstrong and I are going to take turns overseeing the program, until you can find a full time advisor…”
“You’re not going to be our advisor?” Peyton asked, raising both of her eyebrows.
“I’m going to try to make it to practice, but I do have other commitments. I’ll be there when I can. Promise.” Coach Armstrong didn’t so much seem the cheerleading sort. Coach Armstrong seemed like the sort who would have taken up cheerleading for a week just to try and show cheerleaders how lame cheerleading was. “The gym is yours on Fridays* from 4:30 -6:00 pm, if you want it. You can use the field any time it’s not in use by the established sports teams.”
“What about the pool?” Peyton asked.
“Why would you need the pool?”
“Back Handsprings.Tucks, round-offs into flip-flop combos with no handed...” Coach Kerry shook her head, letting out another small chuckle.
“One step at a time. Let’s work on some basics first, before I have to have waivers signed.”
“Basics. We can do that. And thanks, Coach Kerry. You won’t be disappointed. Promise! I’m gonna go size out some of the uniforms in that box, and have them cleaned. And then I’m going to let everyone know about Friday practice. And we’re gonna need a car wash, because summer is coming.”
“Peyton! One step at a time.” Peyton had to smile at that as she slowed herself down.
“Can’t help it Coach. My steps are just a little faster than most is all.”
“Save that for track in that case. But for now? Congratulations, Westbrook has itself a squad. I’ll see you and them this Friday, 4:30, in the gym.”
