Re: How I spent my spring break...
The text messages were being read...but Diego had little opportunity to reply. Since landing in Mexico, his father had been working him into the ground. Nothing Diego did seemed to impress Santos Mendez. In fact, nothing he had done had warranted any sort of approval from the man. It was just one more night though. One more night, and it would be over. His flight was tomorrow afternoon. He'd be back in Paragon City, and he could put this whole miserable trip behind him. For now though...
Diego ducked just a split second before the eskrima stick could connect with the side of his head.
For now his father was seeing just how super Diego's super reflexes were...
He managed to avoid the hit to the head, but Santos's leg snapped out, not even missing a beat when his initial attack missed. Diego stumbled back, gritting his teeth a little as he picked himself back up.
"Your mother was dodging bullets by the time she was your age!" his father barked.
Diego, who generally didn't rile so easily, couldn't help but bristle a bit when he brought his mother up. Santos disappeared in a thick whirl of smoke, teleporting away. The young man frowned as he assumed a defensive posture. The warehouse that they were using was full of shadows that his father liked to use to his advantage. It had the added effect of forcing Diego to use his meta abilities to fend off attacks. It was frustrating, to say the least.
"What exactly have you been doing at that school of yours, boy?"
Diego turned his head, trying to find the voice.
"Don't you understand the responsibility you bear with those powers of yours?"
The voice came from another part of the warehouse. Santos had teleported again.
"You were supposed to be learning at Westbrook. All I can see is that you've learned to play at being a hero. You've been wasting your time on something mundane, and in the end pointless."
Diego bristled once more. His time hadn't been wasted! In fact, most of his time spent at the school was spent dealing with the torments of Shortest Breath, something that his father would never understand. Those weeks had been spent doing anything but playing around! He teleported, leaving behind a dense cloud of purple smoke. He reappeared where he thought his father was.
He brought his forearms up in a block just barely in time to intercept the stick. It hurt like hell, and sent shivers of pain through his arm, but it was better than taking the blow full on in the face. "If you'd actually called...if you'd actually pretended for half a second that you honestly gave a shit about me-"
Santos's hand reached out, grabbing Diego. In one swift movement, Diego landed flat on his back. The air rushed out of him at when he hit the floor.
"Why do you think I flew you out here? You're slow, Diego."
Diego teleported again, reappearing on rickety catwalk above his father. He didn't move, didn't utter a sound. He watched his father prowl around below him.
"I could show you so much more than those teachers at that school of yours."
Santos disappeared. Diego tensed and waited. Sure enough, his father started talking again, this time a good distance away.
"I could show you how to use your powers to help the people who really need your help. The people here need heroes..."
Santos must have teleported again, because his voice came from another part of the warehouse.
"Let the heroes of Paragon City help their own. There is a cancer here. And you can help remove it."
The warehouse filled with a thunderous silence. Diego bit his lip as he scanned the warehouse floor below. He senses were screaming though. His dad was near. The problem was...where? He felt that now all too familiar chill wash over him. Santos appeared in front of him. The catwalk groaned in protest at the added weight, and Diego quickly realized just how rickety his position was as the metal rocked beneath his feet.
Diego frowned as he carefully rose from his crouched position. His father still held the eskrima sticks in hand, but he didn't raise them. He looked down at his son expectantly. Diego couldn't help but think just how much of an ass his father was. After all these years of being ignored for the most part, he suddenly just wanted Diego in his life again? And how deluded was Santos if he thought Diego would just magically decide to leave his mother to live in Mexico?
Diego shook his head. "I want no part of what you're doing, dad. Maybe you think I'm wasting my time at Westbrook, but I don't..."
He disappeared in a puff of purple smoke, teleporting back down to the warehouse floor. He glanced up at Santos. "I'm done here. I won't be coming back."
