"I'm going to come closer, see if that helps, don't worry." Chris slowly moved closer with the scanner, hoping that being closer would help pick up the sounds. He also checked to confirm it was indeed on. He got several feet closer, and sighed, "It's not working. I can see you now, though. That's still a step up."
Chris listened to the scanner, and swore for a second he heard something, but couldn't make it out. "Wait, was that you? If it was, try doing it again..."

The same very minor, faint static is picked up, and cut off.

Chris nodded at the sound, "Okay, this thing can't pick up the sound like that. I'm going to try adjusting the frequencies. Just try talking slow, and I'll see if I can pick something up." Chris tried adjusting the frequencies as he was taught in the manual that came with the equipment. "It's kinda cool to do this."
Chris fiddled with the device a bit while Lucas talked, the static continuing. Every now and then it seemed as distant voices, but it quickly turned back to static. "Almost had it there.."
A bit later he finally got the frequency set, but it was still just a distant voice talking far too quickly and quietly for him to understand. "Okay, sorry Lucas but I can't use this to talk to you, it's not working right. But I have one very important question I have to ask, just nod or shake your head to answer."
"Is there another one that stops you from talking with people? Another ghost I mean."

The shadowy figure shakes its head no, gives a little wave, and walks off.

Chris nodded to Lucas, "I was.... afraid you'd say that. I'll find another way to talk to you, and I'll be back." He turned off the audio device and watched Lucas walk off. "Thank you for talking to me again. And... I will keep my word about not using magic to communicate."
Once Lucas was gone, Chris sat down, took off the goggles, and began thinking... Looks like he was going to have to ask her for help after all. He was just going to need to make sure she knew what she was doing first.

Chris waited in the commons for Sarah. He had left a message for her to meet him in the commons, but wanted to wait till she arrived to explain why.

Sarah got the message, and had debated just flaking. She had absolutely no desire to see what it was about, just like she had no desire to be at Westbrook Academy. Eventually though, curiosity got the better of her. And so she arrived finally, later the message said to be in the commons.
She looked just a dour as she did the day she met Chris at orientation, and greeted him with a not so friendly, "What."

Chris nodded to her, figuring he needed to get right to the point with her.
"Hey Sarah. I heard about your power, and was wanting to ask you if you could do me a favor. It's up to you. You've probably heard about me talking to the resident ghost, Lucas, but it's kinda hard to communicate clearly with him, being a ghost and all. I was hoping you'd be willing to use your power and see if it's possible for you to talk with him."

Sarah just scowled at Chris. "Why?"
She wasn't even sure why she even asked the question. She was already against the idea of using her powers. Truth be told, they kind of scared the crap out of her. She'd seen what they'd done to Susan. Her dad never let up about how her mother had ultimately gone nuts because of her powers, how he was oh so scared it would happen to her. All things that Chris obviously wouldn't know, but it didn't stop her from getting a bit defensive about it.

Chris nodded, "I'm trying to find a better way to communicate with him. Right now he's restricted to writing on nearby surfaces. If I can find some way to make it easier to communicate, it'd be better. I know I won't be able to call you any time I want to talk with him, but maybe if I find some methods that do work I can find some way to bridge the gap and be able to talk to him without calling you."
