Real world References

Post by Wade Braddock » Thu Mar 01, 2012 11:03 am

Just a quick question. I'm doing the writing for Wade and I was wondering about real world references. I've seen people mention iPods and such, but what about people, bands, current events? Do you assume that anyone famous in our real world is also alive and doing their thing in City of Heroes lore? Does the NFL or other major sporting leauges exist, and do they have today's current rosters? Do current pop stars exist and have their same hit songs?

Thanks for the input.

Wade, we have gone as far as RPing our characters watching Serenity... while the players synced up and watched it at the same time! Pretty sure if it exists in real life you can reference it in RP, just a lot of people may not know what you are talking about depending on what it is.

I agree here. Personally, I rp various characters' knowledge (or lack thereof) of pop culture. For all intents and purposes, Paragon City -is- set as a current day city in Rhode Island. So, even though many of its citizens can come from random planets/dimensions, I rp anyone of this current place/time (whether originally hailing from Paragon or somewhere else on current planet Earth) to have -some- knowledge of events/music/movies/tv/etc. But to varying degrees. There's lots of stuff my toons wouldn't know, that other ppl would. And vice versa, there's lots of stuff they would know that others wouldn't.

The only debate I've ever really heard is about superheroes/comic books. (Would a Superman comic be as epic to people who live in a city full of heroes who can fly, bend steel, run faster than a speeding bullet? etc.) Players in the past have made up comic book heroes, or we've talked about actual Marvel/DC heroes, there's no hard, fast ruling on this, except we don't RP that Captain America or Batman or anyone like that is real.

Some things we do make up - like Lords of Evercraft - a game many of the students here play. But if Wade said "I play WoW," No one will jump down your throat with "that doesn't exist!"

Music wise - we have karaoke nights where we often link to songs on youtube. We have dances with actual DJ's who take requests (split infinity radio broadcasts) so the same pop stars/groups and things exist.

And as mentioned - we've done movie nights, Serenity, Princess Bride, Rocky Horror Picture Show, etc. where we gather in the theater on base and all watch the same show. Chris and David last night were watching USA Network shows in the commons last night.

Hope that helps!

My usual take on superhero comics is that they exist in the CoX-verse for different reasons than in our world. It becomes less about the cool factor of the powers and more about the stories and characters, like printed soap operas. The game makes an effort to show that 'real' heroes have fans and followers. Flambeaux's reason for living is to become famous as a superhero. I imagine a great deal of 'hunger' in pop culture for racy, scandalous stories about those crazy metas - much like the real world thirst for celebrity gossip and reality shows. One time, I even went so far as to use one of the CoH comics in game as a fictionalized account of a mostly true story of the most famous supergroup in the world, the Freedom Phalanx.
