WESTBROOK ACADEMY CAMPUS RULES
These are the in character rules for Westbrook Academy. They are intended to be used as guidelines for what could happen to your character if they're caught breaking the rules. This will give you a good starting point to go off of for writing stories about your character getting into mischief. Not every character will break rules, but for those who do this should prove to be a valuable resource.
Assault
Assault is broken out into two main categories, minor and serious. A minor assault is one that did not result in injury where as a serious one does. Assault differs from fighting. Fighting is covered below. An assault is an unprovoked and/or one sided attack.
Minor Assaults are on a three strikes you're out policy. The first assault will lead to a short term suspension. The second will result in a short to longer term suspension. The third will result in expulsion.
Major Assaults are immediately met with expulsion.
In either case police are notified and the assaulted student’s family may elect to press charges. Assault is illegal.
Weapons
Non-lethal conventional weapons are allowed for patrolling students as long as they are registered with the state and the school. Students may carry such weapons on their person at any time, but they must be kept concealed unless they are patrolling or training. Use of a conventional weapon on campus outside of patrol or training is not permitted and will result in disciplinary action ranging from detention to expulsion, depending on the nature of the usage. Possession of any unregistered conventional weapon will result in expulsion and the police will be contacted.
Drugs/Tobacco/Alcohol
The campus and any property within twenty feet of it is a drug, tobacco and alcohol free zone. Any student caught with alcohol or tobacco faces suspension. Any student caught with illegal drugs faces expulsion. Any staff or faculty member caught with these items may lose their jobs. Any one else will be escorted off campus and police may be contacted.
Fighting
Fighting differs from assault in that two students attack each other. Fights usually have a lead in and it is up to the faculty present to gauge the difference between a fight and an assault. Fights are on a three strikes and your out policy much like minor assaults though typically the first fight has the option for detention instead of suspension. A fight in which injury occurs results in steeper penalties ranging from suspension to expulsion depending on circumstance.
Destruction/Defacement/Theft of School Property
Destruction, defacement, and theft of school property carries different penalties with it depending on the amount of damage done and whether or not it was intentional or just reckless behavior. In all cases the student or the student’s family are required to pay for the damages. In the cases where they cannot, penalties may be steeper. Depending on these factors, penalties could range from detention for breaking a toilet while pretending to surf on it while your friend snaps a video on his phone to expulsion and police being contacted for intentionally punching through a $10,000 dollar statue of William Westbrook.
Threats/Harassment
Threats and harassment are evaluated on a case by case basis. Penalties range from detention for minor threats to expulsion and contact of the police. There are many factors such as the severity of the threat or how likely faculty felt that the threat would be carried through.
Curfew
Yes, we have one, but no, it's not in-game enforced. It's expected that you be back to the dorm buildings by curfew time. Westbrook is a closed campus, meaning to get in after this time you'll need to be signed onto campus. There are RA desks in the dorms and there are cameras in the hallways and entryways for the safety of the students. Chances are if you are late? You will be caught. The RA's also do perform random checks.
In game - we do not RP curfew. Just because it is 2 am Eastern in real time doesn't mean you're breaking curfew by being in Talos - unless you choose to RP it that way, in which case there will likely be consequences for your actions. The school is responsible for your safety. The authorities are notified when persons are missing for more than 24 hours.
Power Use
Unauthorized use of powers on another student, staff or faculty member can result in punishment ranging from detention, suspension, or expulsion depending on the nature of the powers used. Case by case exceptions are made for students who can not turn their powers off, though depending on the effect the student may be kept separate from other students.
Any intentional unauthorized use of any power to harm another student, staff or faculty member will result in immediate expulsion. If a student harms another because of loss of control then that student may be isolated from the other students for their protection. This isn’t a punishment but a necessity until they figure out how to suppress or control potentially dangerous powers.
Cheating
Any student caught cheating faces punishments ranging from suspension to expulsion depending on which offense it was and the teacher passing judgment. The student will also be given an F for that course.
Skipping Class
Any student who has an unexcused absence from class is met with short term suspension. Repeat offenses can lead to long term suspensions. Showing a complete disregard for class and skipping them regularly will eventually lead to expulsion.
PUNISHMENTS
Detention
A student who faces detention will be required to stay after class lets out for everyone else and do their home work, clean erasers, peel potatoes for dinner or whatever the faculty or staff deems a reasonable punishment. Be creative with your character's detention. The teachers will be. Detention can often lead into an interesting story in and of itself, especially depending on who you're in detention with.
Suspension
Westbrook is a boarding school. When a student is suspended he is not sent home, instead he attends all of his classes in an empty class room, does all of the same work but accrues no credit for it. Furthermore, they will not be permitted to participate in any extra curricular activities for that time. This includes sports, clubs, dances, rallies, etc. Where detention can make an interesting story, suspension almost always does not. It's a good tool to use if you need an excuse for your bad boy or girl to miss a dance or another in game event because you yourself will be out of town.
A short term suspension is usually a few days. Longer term suspensions can last upwards of a week. Because the student is getting no credit for work done in this time it can really hurt his grades.
Expulsion
Expulsion is exactly what it sounds like. Don't do anything that would get your character expelled without thinking long and hard about it first. Even if you're retiring the character you should always run any expulsion story by your officer first.
USE YOUR BEST JUDGEMENT
These rules are a guideline. For the most part we expect you to self regulate rule breaking in your stories. If you have questions you should contact your officer but we trust you to make good decisions on how the faculty would react.
Your character won't necessarily be punished for every rule they break. Everyone gets away with something now and again. Going over board with this though makes for a boring story. Nobody wants to hear about how Billy Everyteen is awesome and always gets away with things. Remember conflict and consequences are what makes a story good. Without them it's just fluff.
