She dropped her lunch plate onto the table with enough disdain to tousle some of the noodles into the applesauce; at least whatever it was that looked enough like applesauce that that is what she was going to assume it was.

She slouched into the cafeteria chair, craning her neck back to say to the ceiling, “... this uniform itches.”

There were two freshmen boys at the same table, sat across from her. Their snickers and aside whispers between them pulled Cassandra from her slump. She looked to them with a turned brow and lip. “... what?”

They stared quiet for a moment. Both of them a little overweight and very underheighted; their hair was a similar flop of a red curled mess, and their faces spotted with acne. Brother, they must have been. How wicked. The first lunch of the first day and already she was sitting at the wrong table.

One of them elbowed the other, whispering with emphasis.

“You ask her.”

The other one elbowed back in a mirror fashion.

“You ask her.”

She kept her turn downed stare, looking back and forth between the two of them, waiting. The first of them eventually, finally, turned to her. He cleared his throat, but his voice cracked when he opened his mouth none the less. “Do yo-... are you the witch?”

She smirked over a short sighed laugh, rolling her eyes to the side. Picking up her carton of milk from the table with one hand, she tossed the other into the air dismissively with a self satisfied snicker. “No, she is that other one. The taller one.”

The two looked between themselves, and back to her, in sync. They broke into giddy grins, “Do a something like a witch!” "Something like a witch would!"

She set the carton into her lap while she pulled back the tabs to open it, carrying on the conversation with a feigned interest. “Like what...” She looked back up from the milk in her lap, and stared wide eyed at the first boy. “... this?”

He met her stare for a moment out of amusement, but she persisted until he became uncomfortable, leaning back and away into his chair, hiding one shoulder behind his brother while he asked him. “What is she doing to me right me?”

The brother reached too for his own milk while he answered. “I think you're about to become a frog!” While he reached to pull at the tabs on his carton, it crushed inward on its self, throwing milk into his face and across his sweater vest. He and his brother worked together to wipe it off, getting into each other's way. They shouted out together. “Why did you do that?”

Cassandra burst into a laugh, leaning back into her chair while bringing her milk up to press it against her lips, extending a holding finger out to point at him. “That? That, was not me.”

The other brother shot her glare, as best as he could muster one. “Liar.”

“No, you would know. My hair turns to snakes when I cast. Honestly, that was clumsy luck.”

The two gave each other a somewhat pale stare, talking between them again in sync. “Maybe it was that ghost...”

She turned a doubtful brow. “Oh, of course. It wasn't the witch, so it had to have been the gho-” Interrupting her, her milk then spilled its self across and down her in the same fashion. She shot up from her chair, near about throwing it into the back of the student sat behind her.

Holding her arms out to her side to drip, with hardly contained composure, she stared down at the two with a grimace.

“... said a ghost, huh?”

That night, well after curfew, Cassandra slipped a piece of amate between the top of her door and its frame; imbued with a sigil, this would give a subtle suggestion to an RA who might be passing through on checks that her room need not be looked in on. She then with a cat's paw in her pocket to cover the noises she would make snuck out of her room, out of the dorm, and into the small grove between the campuses.

Her first Magic Club meeting was tomorrow night, and she had to make a good impression. How she saw it, there were enough spell casters on the campus that she could fall into the background, while one even headed up the club. Hell, she had to make better than a good impression, she wanted to stand apart; and if she could bring proof of this ghost rumor those two freshman mentioned, that could be it.

Once she reached the grove, she pulled from the bag she carried with her a collection of stones and set them up in a circle. Placing atop of each stone at the four cardinal points a candle; this was to be her warding circle. Whatever this ghost was it had already once thrown milk on her and she was still trying to get that smell out of her hair. Out of the bottom of her bag she pulled out her grimoire, and from tucked into the center of it a small notepad and pen where she had listed for herself the bullet points of this summoning ritual.

Taking one last read of her notes, she left the the pen, pad and bag outside the circle and entered.

Sitting at its center, she chanted a foreign tongued incantation; the stones then seemed to begin to dance in their own shadows, and the candles light into each a different temperature's hue, with a soft blue to the west a burning red to the south.

Upon its completion, Cassandra opened her eyes expecting to find a spectral form or hear a distant voice, or, well, anything that may have let her know that she had summoned the spirit to her. There was nothing.

Disappointed and now in a bit of a fowl mood, she took her pendant from around her neck and, holding it in hand to use it as an athame, cut right then left at the unseen barrier of the circle, creating for herself something of a door through which she could leave.

She approached the notepad to read what it is that she must have missed.

The small notebook is opened to a fresh sheet of paper.

The notebook gave her pause.

How could Chris have known what she was doing, and what spell was it he used to have masked his signature while he was casting.

Unless something she did had worked.

Curious, she took the pen and wrote in the line below.

Chris. Teach me this one.

The pen doesn't seem to move, but words appear on the page.

Cassandra took a step back from the notepad.

There was a smile across her face wider than she knew she could hold one. It had worked.

She reached again for the pen, writing below the ghost once more.

A summoning is all I have, unless you want to be pen pals.
What is your name?

Everything Lucas wrote up until that point disappears off the page, but Cass' writing remains.

There it was.

She had not only successfully summoned the ghost, but also got his name. Closing the notepad with the pen still tucked between its pages, she gathered her components and readied to head back to her dorm. Tomorrow, she would bring this to the Magic Club and cement her place as a spell caster on campus.

Before she left, Cassandra turned to where her circle had been, and looked the area over with a soft smile.

"Goodnight, Lucas."

Chris came back into the commons, Magic Club had just ended and he had something he finally wanted to ask Lucas. "Hey Lucas, you around? Got something I'd like to ask you about."
