The Administration at Westbrook released the following statement this morning. Students will find it posted around campus.

While the Westbrook Academy maintains a policy of neutrality on most political issues, we encourage students, faculty and staff to participate in the political process. However, such participation must adhere to the Westbrook Standards of Conduct (as presented in the Academy Handbook).

Remember at all times that your behavior and choices reflect upon the school, your colleagues and your fellow students. Exercise appropriate judgment.

Please refer any questions to designated Faculty and Staff Advisers or to the Office of the Headmaster. Thank you in advance for your cooperation and forethought

(Moderate language, political themes.)

In the end, Abigail Blackburn went to the protest on a dare.

She'd seen the coverage of the Occupy Paragon movement on television, of course. And she'd noted the fliers as they'd gone up across the Westbrook Academy (and then paid them heed a second time as someone -- Roach Copeland, most likely -- had defaced them one by one). Some of her classmates had already visited the makeshift camp in Atlas Park. They'd then followed through with what passed for 21st century activism -- they'd blogged about it and tweeted about it and conferred on the matter at length via Skype and their Faceplace pages. There'd even been at least one tepid campus meeting on the subject.

But none of those things had spurred Abigail to seek out the protestors. No, for that brilliant idea, she had to thank her brother Roy.

The subject had first come up during their weekly phone call. Roy had spotted footage of the movement on the news that evening -- after Galaxy City had been devastated, he'd taken to keeping a close eye on events in Paragon. The protests had both intrigued and amused him. Nothing like it back home, Abigail had supposed. The Occupy movement had dwindled to almost nothing in El Paso after a weak start, and it hadn't found any traction in McAllyn County to begin with.

"You ought to go down there," Roy had said.

"Beg pardon?"

"You ought to go down there."

"Why in hell would I do that?"

Roy had chuckled then. And Abigail had grown deeply wary in response. She'd recognized the laugh -- it was the same one that had launched a thousand practical jokes during her childhood.

"So you can get Charlie a t-shirt," he'd told her. "Some buttons, too. Mebbe write up a note that says, 'Check cleared! Thanks for all your support!' Mail the whole shebang to his office. That way he opens it in front of his bosses. He'll shit a brick, I guarantee it."

The idea had had a certain perverse appeal. Her oldest brother, a prominent attorney in Houston, had once referred to Ronald Reagan as a "liberal pinko sell-out," and his opinions on actual progressives were unrepeatable in polite company. During local and state elections, his blood pressure went on the rise if a Democrat stood for office, let alone got elected.

"Bet they got a mailing list, too," Roy had added. "Sign his ass up for that. Oh, and pamphlets! You should get some pamphlets!"

Roy's own politics were well right of center, too, but he never let that get in the way of a gag. Of course he was also careful to stay out of the line of fire. He preferred to think of himself as a criminal mastermind of sorts in such matters, but Abigail had long since grown wise to his maneuvers.

"Lissen ta yourself. You're supposed ta be a grown man, you know that?"

"What can I say? Yankin' Charlie's chain keeps me young."

"'cept you're tryin' ta get me ta do the yankin'."

Another chuckle. "Don't worry, I'll take the heat in the end. Cross my heart an' spit."

Abigail had considered the matter. "No, can't do it. Charlie's already tuggin' hard on the purse strings. He cuts me off an' that's the end of schoolin' here."

There'd been a long pause as Roy had weighed his options. Then he'd gone nuclear.

"Double-dog dare you."

Abigail had snorted. "You really reckon that still works?"

"It was good enough to get you to sit your ass in a shoppin' cart and roll backwards a mile downhill," Roy had reminded her. "Figure it's good enough to get you to go buy a damn t-shirt."

And, to Abigail Blackburn's later chagrin, it had been.

With a touch, he had been brought into the situation. And with a touch, he kept remaining within it.

Brodi had been in a funk for weeks. Ever since he had found himself unable to soak in the waters of the beach on account of something brushing against his skin and initiating a 'flash'. A memory. A glimpse into a life that wasn't his. He was unable to do a lot of things he was used to doing because of those 'glimpses'. Hugs and high fives or even just wrestling with David in the room while trying not to make too much noise.

So he had gone Emo. His dimples didn't show as much, his hoodie remained on. He hid from the public and just tried to wait the whole 'power swap' thing out. The problem, however, was that it was beginning to feel that he'd be waiting a long time.

He then tried moving to meditation. Then yoga. Then communing with nature (until he brushed the tree with his arm and saw what a couple had done against it an hour ago...). Nothing seemed to help. He was desperate to find something to occupy him... which was an ironic phase.

When he had saw the flier for the Occupy Movement, he took it. While he couldn't be the hero he wanted or the beach 'bunny' that he was at heart, he could still do this. Embrace his political side and throw all his frustration towards that!

Yes, he had made a sign. And perhaps he did use too much glitter on his wording that caused it to shake loose and onto his hair whenever he held it up high. But by the time he arrived at the protest, that fear and sadness that had consumed him was gone. Instead, he was waving his sign around and chanting along with a crowd being fueled by the addictive substance known as the 'group mind'.

He saw a drum circle was in the process of forming. He witnessed the collective will of the people being uplifted when a hero flew through the air with a banner trailing him reading 'I believe in the 99 Percent'. He observed responsible adults and teens invoke their right to hold a lawful assembly...

Okay, it wasn't all perfect. He ignored the pot smoking and a few of the folks talking about a need for a violent revolution. But atleast the good outweighed the bad, right?

So while he wasn't able to surf. While he wasn't able to be the hero he was. And while he still had to miss out on hugs and high fives and late night wrestling matches with David over who controlled the remote control in their dorm... he finally felt like himself again.

He was Brodi Andrews and he was feeling like a hero.

With glitter in his hair.

Too many chiefs and not enough Indians -- that was one way of looking at the makeshift camp in front of city hall. The kindest way, possibly.

Complete and utter chaos was another interpretation.

After spending half an hour wandering among the Occupy Paragon protestors, Abigail Blackburn was inclined to go with the latter point of view. And yet it seemed to work for these folks. She figured there must have been upwards of five hundred people assembled, maybe substantially more. In the course of her walk, she'd passed yoga classes, a daycare set-up, a free breakfast cart and even what looked to be a fair stab at a lending library.

The temperature hovered around the mid-fifties, but tempers seemed mild enough. She'd heard no angry voices, and no one appeared bothered about her presence, though she'd made it clear she wasn't there to join. She'd had no trouble finding a selection of t-shirts, and she'd bought one not only for Charlie, but also for her soon-to-come niece (who, by God, was not going to be named Matilda). Let Roy laugh that one off.

She could have left at any time, but the carnival atmosphere of the camp held her there. She watched kids get their faces painted while their parents learned the right way to position themselves -- keep the signs waving -- for the television cameras. She listened to some of the speeches, and she read some of the pamphlets. None of it made her a convert, but she was willing to bet neither Roy nor Charlie (nor her other brothers, for that matter) would have believed that the protestors were doing substantially more than just sitting around and holding up snarky signs.

She'd finally turned toward the transit station when she spotted Lee Boyer. The burly Kings Row patrol officer waved to her from across the plaza. She gave him a sheepish wave in return and let the crowd carry her in his direction.

"Ice Cube!" he called, and then he clapped his hands together and laughed.

She'd met Boyer back when Westbrook had insisted she qualify on the PPD firing range as part of her admissions requirements. He'd been in a cluster of cops standing around waiting for her to fail. After she'd aced the target practice, he'd been the only one to shake her hand. When the school had moved the admissions goalposts a second time and told her she had to run the Hogan's Alley course, he'd volunteered to be her partner for the test. Since then, she'd done two ride-alongs with him and had a third planned.

In some ways, he reminded her of Roy. He was the class clown of his precinct, for one thing. And, much like Roach Copeland, you didn't get his seal of approval until you received one of his nicknames. Lee's tended to be more straightforward, though. Up until a month ago, she'd been "Six Gun." Now it was "Ice Cube."

Abigail shook his hand. "What're you doin' over here?"

Boyer rubbed his thumb against his fingers. "Overtime, Ice Cube, overtime. Everybody's here. We got Steel Canyon cops, Founders Falls police, you name it. Cops to the right, cops to the left. Be damn sure you don't spit on any sidewalks."

"Doesn't look you need so many folks."

Boyer shrugged. "All these people, they make the brass jumpy."

"Expect they got a right ta be here, though."

"Just 'cause they got the right," said Boyer, "doesn't mean the people calling the shots have to like it."

He nodded at the t-shirts.

"What brings you downtown, Ice Cube? Never in a million years figured this was your scene."

"It's not." She waved the idea away. "Came down here for somebody else. I was just on my way back to school."

"Good deal, then." He paused to scan the crowd. "Say, if you ever wanna pull some light duty down here -- directing traffic or whatever -- I bet I could swing that. There's still budget for more manpower."

"Oh, I dunno, Lee. Might pick myself up a sign an' go protestin'."

She'd meant it as a tease, but he didn't take it that way. Something flickered in his eyes. Concern? "Believe I'd give that a miss, if I were you."

She frowned. "You heard something?"

"Haven't heard anything, don't know anything." He gestured back toward the camp, and Abigail noted that the sweep of his hand took in police and protestors alike. "But take a good long sniff, Ice Cube. You smell that?"

"Guessin' you don't mean the porta-potties?"

"Har. And oh yeah, har. Maybe you better let a trained professional handle the jokes." Boyer shook his head and ran a hand through his thinning hair. "That, my young hillbilly, is the distinct odor of trouble brewing. You can take it to the bank."

They parted then, because Boyer spotted a guy hawking bootleg DVDs. But his words lingered with Abigail on the long train ride back to school.

Trouble brewing.

The more she thought about it, the more she decided he might just be right.

From the Paragon Times, Saturday, November 12th, 2011

The PPD and FDPC delivered a blow to the Occupy Paragon protests last night when FDPC officials confiscated gas-powered generators from the protests’ encampment in Atlas Park.

The generators were being used to charge everything from laptops to portable heaters at the camp.

The protesters responded to the confiscations with booing and chants of “Shame!” PPD officials reported half a dozen arrests made when protesters began throwing debris at fire fighters. Members of the Occupy Paragon protest dispute that claim, saying the PPD overstepped their bounds and arrested bystanders.

Many Occupy protests around the country have faced violent clashes between protesters and police in recent weeks, but so far Occupy Paragon had avoided such incidents. This weekend may mark a turning point in the relationship between city officials and the protesters however.

Hearing of the confiscation of the generators, some citizens with meta abilities have pledged to support the protesters in any way possible. A hero identifying herself only as Lectrogal, who is registered as possessing the ability to manipulate electricity, has volunteered to help keep the protesters’ electronics charged.

With overnight temperatures this weekend predicted to drop into the 30s, it is unclear whether the protest will continue to gain momentum or if protesters will stay home as winter comes closer.

“Why didn’t you tell me people were protesting in Atlas Park!?”

Sydney had his arms full of various devices as he came back from the storage area of his lab, laying them all out on a work table less than gentle.

“I figured you of all people Sydney Walker wouldn’t care about sitting out in tents, protesting about being part of the 99%.”

He rummaged through a bin, looking for something not making any effort to address Taylor directly.

“Are you kidding? I love protests! Where the hell is that thing, I swore I had it stored here.”

Taylor gave him a skeptical look as she bent down on the other side of the shelf helping him look for whatever he was digging for, without knowing what it was.

“Hah! There it is!” He pulled up what looked like a modified multiple grenade launcher, tucking it against his shoulder as if to aim it. Grinning he lowered it, rubbing his finger against the etched “Walker Enterprises” along the stalk.

Taylor let out a sigh “The protests are peaceful Syd.”

“I think what you meant to say is they are a giant drain on police forces, forcing them to be glorified baby sitters because some people have nothing better to do than stir up trouble. Besides, you just know something is going to break out eventually, and when it does the cops are going to want only the finest in hippy blasting equipment. Nothing says “get back to work hippy” like a canister of gas fired at 100 feet per second, right in the sternum.”

Sydney was busy digging out various parts and munitions as he spoke, Taylor for now just watched.

"I think part of the point is that many of them can't find jobs ... You're totally failing current events, aren't you?"

He didn’t need to see her to know she was rolling her eyes. “Grab the binder over there, it has all the DATA certification forms I need. This modified riot gear is getting donated to the PPD, if they use it? Maybe I’ll be able to work out some sort of contract with them in the future for riot gear!"

"So people are out there trying to change the way big corporate America works, and you're going to use this to try and get a contract from corporate America?"

"You say that like its a bad thing! Plus somehow I imagine my way will get me further than sitting out in the grass in the middle of November, freezing my ass off with a mob of people."

Taylor just handed him a clip board, shaking her head.

“Hey! Check out sheet, just what I was looking for. Thanks. Alright, low voltage stun grenades, check. Gas canisters, check. Stinger Grenades, check. Low Current pacification grenades, check. Flashbangs, check and double check aaaand sonic grenades, in case any mettas decide to show up and get all uppity. Check.”

“You really think they are going to let you donate all this?”

Sydney shrugged “It’s worth a shot right? Oh, grab the number there on the cork board for dangerous goods transport; somehow I don’t think they’d appreciate it if I showed up in your truck with a bin of this stuff. You think maybe they'd let meeeee volunteer to keep them in line? Or if things got out of hand to bring them back IN line!"

Taylor picked up a bin, helping where she could “You are enjoying this way too much you know? And no, I don't imagine they'd let you handle crowd control after classes let out”

Sydney let out a sigh for a moment, before picking up what looked to be a modified AA-12 balancing it in his one hand. He slowly put on a pair of shooting glasses that were laying on the table in stylish fashion.

“Occupy Paragon, no one occupies my city.”

With that, he grabbed a drum of gas rounds, locking them into place with a satisfying *click*

"Let’s roll!"

Taylor murmured something under her breath sounding like "Help me" as she followed as best she could, carrying the other bin of equipment.

Crey Launches Avalon 5.0, Invites Public to Holiday Fair

PARAGON CITY, RI -- November 15, 2011 -- Crey Industries today announced the launch of Avalon 5.0, the latest iteration of its award-winning, proprietary operating system for smartphones and tablets. To commemorate the launch, the company will host a fun-filled Friday holiday fair on the grounds of its Atlas Park campus.

"We think Avalon 5.0 is exactly what consumers have been asking for," said Larry Willis, Vice President of Crey Consumer Services. "It combines blazing fast speed with an improved intuitive UI and a host of new functions. We feel this marks the culmination of years of hard work, and we're asking the public to come out and celebrate that achievement with us."

Avalon 5.0 boasts processing and connection speeds up to 2.5 times faster than Android or iOS, as well as compatibility in with both HTML5 and Flash. It also incorporates improved GPS coding, enhanced security features and the latest version of Crey's proprietary web browser Horizons.

But Avalon 5.0's most innovative feature is Sara, the intelligent assistant that helps you get things done just by asking. Responding to voice commands, this intuitive program can answer questions, give directions, perform complex calculations and more.

"We realize that what consumers treasure most is time," said Willis. "Sara can help them work, shop and travel more efficiently, thus allowing them more of the leisure time they deserve with family and friends."

The Crey Holiday Fair, a one-day event taking place on Friday, November 18, will include games, prizes, an ice skating rink, and a chance to meet Santa Claus himself! The event will take place on Crey's Atlas Park campus from 9am until 9pm, and vendors from various Crey consumer divisions will be on hand to answer questions about Crey products and showcase a selection of the latest merchandise available for purchase.

Avalon 5.0 is available to download via all approved electronic devices. The suggested retail price is $199.99, but consumers using the code HPYHLDYS for the first week will receive a five percent discount.
