Taylor tapped her fingers on the arm rests in a pattern that made sense to her. Her PSP was right there. Right in the bag. She could have given three finishing moves in Mortal Kombat by now. She figured maybe part of the lecture was about Lauren. Maybe she finally got caught doing something. Maybe it was about whatever happened at that big game. If more people played Madden 11, they'd see there is no 'fight other players' option. She wished they'd make an NHL game with that option. That would be great! But whatever. A few people get out of line, the whole school has to suffer. That guy in Full Metal Jacket got beat with bars of soap for something like this. Then again, beating people with bars of soap would probably net another lecture, and besides, soap wasn't flammable.

To pass the time, she ran though a list in her head, flammable vs. inflammable, even though both words meant the same thing. Then came the commotion.

"What now?" She muttered. Another big attack like in Galaxy? What's with the guy in the suit? Maybe a drill? Why were the faculty being shielded? Weren't they heroes? In any case, she wasn't about to sit there and depend on someone to defend her. She might only have sidekick status while patrolling, but this could be life or death! The theme to Underdog ran through her head as she jumped to the aisle, gearing up to light it up.

And quick as it started it was over. She was knocked back but landed on her feet which she considered a lucky happenstance. But the fire was gone. She concentrated hard, but there was nothing, no fire, just a strange tingling in her muscles. Spider sense? Her fingers twitched. Even the slightest moves seemed more fluid.

What the hell was going on?

In the confined space of the theater, David could feel most of the room. In fact, he was doing just that when all the heads around him started to turn. As quick as that, he dropped the family of dust bunnies in the corner who had been playing out this one great episode of Good Luck, Charlie. The mommy bunny - Amy maybe? - was half way through her performance of "Singing, Dancing Duncans." There was something wrong.

He reached out to try to 'catch' the first wave of light, not that it paid any attention to him. And then he was leaning crookedly in his chair, which was a little dumb because there were obviously better things he should be doing. Better than forgetting to hold himself up. Dumb. There was another glow building up a few rows down in the aisle. David picked himself up and... David picked himself up and... Come on! David picked himself up!

Where did the dust bunnies go? And... everything else in the room. He reached out tentatively to touch the back of the chair in front of him, verify that what he was seeing really was still there.

And then David was shaking his head groggily and stumbling out toward the aisle. His feet disagreed about which one was going to take the next step and he tripped into the next row down. Dizziness forgotten, though not in the least diminished, David stared at the chairs he had just tripped through. He couldn't feel them. He couldn't touch them. Why was he still seeing them?

It finally happened. He'd finally lost his mind for real.

"... seem to be in perfect health, I mean, considering..." The voice faded in and out, blending into the haze of voices and faces. He was out of the tiny, torn uniform. So that had happened. Apparently.

Ar saw when the man appeared; even without the camera drone's help, his peripheral vision was - well, it was awesome, what else? Teleporting into a room full of twitchy mini-heroes meant he was either expected, stupid, or supremely confident because he knew something the rest of the room did not. Ar zoomed in on the stranger, separating the picture from his regular field of vision. The suit fit too closely to conceal much, either arms or armor. Herrera was surprised, so it was down to stupid or confident.

A quick quip, and the device came out. Ar did his best to get a few clear pictures of it for later while his hands darted the last few inches to his guns. The shot was already set, just waiting for execution. Before his arm could whip into place, the first wave hit. Ar waited for the diagnostic to flash the damages, but nothing happened. Nothing happened.

Nothing.

"...called your parents. They--"

"No!" Without thinking, he tried to play back the part of the conversation he'd missed. Nothing. Of course nothing.

"No, no, no, no, no, no, NO NO NO! Do not..."

"Arthur," she says gently. She'd needed to be told who he was when he first got here, that same look of nonrecognition he'd seen on the teachers followed by the same look of shock, quickly covered over with a safe blanket of concern. He hadn't waited in line. He'd spent the duration of the testing, poking, and prodding waiting. Not waiting for it to end. At least the testing was familiar, safe, and over too soon. He was just waiting, looking for something. It had to be there.

Nothing. "DO NOT call them. No! No. No."

"Arthur, it's okay. It's okay." Jenkins. That was her name.

"Are you fucking kidding me? It's gone! All of it! Gone! Just... gone!" And now it was out loud. Out where he could hear himself saying it. Hear someone who sounded like him. The voice was wrong, too deep, even with that panicked edge. Gone. All gone. Where was the rest of him?

"Just don't call them. No. They can't know. They can't! Don't tell them. Please? Please don't tell them." His already blurry vision got blurrier, wetter. He could remember the picture. He could remember looking at it. Why couldn't he see it? Gone. "Don't tell them. They can't know."

"Arthur, I need you to..." The voice faded out, blending into the haze of faces and voices. All gone. Where was the rest of him? He was gone. What did that leave him?

Nothing.

The assembly was one screen of many, She hadn't even been aware Roach was leaning on the robot until the first flash that brought her attention from the other things she was working on. As she brought up the images from the robot the second wave hit and all hell seemed to break loose.

The drone registered some sort of anomaly between the first and second wave but the H.U.D. was wished away so quickly it was hardly given a second thought, only the smallest nod that the primary wireless connection was clamped and the backup was in full affect. Her screens cascaded to darkness as she requested the hook-up to return.

The grey wait that served as the transition from personal perception to the remote was agonizingly slow as she tried to will the thing to accept the connection faster. The true scene she awoke in was confusing. People were panicking some guy was screaming Bad thing! Seats were broken here and there, she thought she saw some blood on an armrest two rows away. She looked to Roach who looked like he might have ridden in one of the dryers to long. He had that strained look in his eye the one he had gotten when his powers flaked out a few weeks ago. Brook moved the robots arm, now her arm to gently touch Roach to try to get his attention and after getting a visual on her other friends that were sitting on various places around the auditorium she was trying to get Roach out of there as soon as possible.

Whatever had happened this was bad this was very bad. Staying calm was her priority staying calm for her friends.

Getting out of the assembly hall and to the bunker to see the nurse was a feat in itself for Donovan. Everything his hands touched burned him. By the time she was able to get to him, several painful welts and blisters were already forming on his palms and fingers. After examining and cleaning Donovans burns, she retrieved a pair of black gloves.

"These were Faige's. We have them in case she ever lost her other ones." The nurse offered.

Donovan was confused. His powers never hurt him before, not like this. "I don't get it." He muttered, taking the gloves in his hand. Surprisingly, all he felt was the material of the gloves and no pain. Whatever they were made of, they were immune to his strange new powers.

The nurse clearly struggled with what to tell this agitated and bewildered teenager. "We're still figuring it out. For now, just wear this gloves. They'll help you out. And get some rest, alright?"

Numbly nodding, Donovan allowed himself to be gently directed to the door. His mind was racing with what was happening, he didn't realize he'd made it back to his room until he was just outside the door. Stepping inside, the first thing he noticed was an unfamiliar sight: Adam passed out on his bed.

Concern for his roommate rose inside Donovan as he rushed to Adam's side and gave him a light shove. "Hey, Adam. Adam!"

"Mm...m'what...?" Adam replied, eyes cracking open.

"Are you alright?" Donovan asked, studying Adam. Nothing looked different, except for the dark bags that had formed under the energy generating teen. "Wow...you look like...I mean, you don't look to great..." Donovan said, stepping back.

Adam pulled himself up to a sitting position with some effort. "I'm drained...like I haven't slept in years..."

"Uh, Adam. You haven't." Donovan pointed out, trying to make the point delicately.

Realization flickered in Adam's eyes, "Oh yeah..." then he keeled over again, asleep before his head hit the pillow. Donovan watched his roommate for a moment. Finally, he got up and inspected himself in the mirror, looking carefully into his eyes. The glow was gone for the most part, but there was definitely a hint of it glimmering in the back...

"What happened down there?" Donovan asked aloud.

Diya had gone to sleep Monday night hungry. She woke up Tuesday morning ravenous.

When her alarm went off the first time, all Diya had the energy to do was reach over and fumble with the off button. It was five in the morning, usually time to get up for her morning work out. Not today.

Her backup alarm went off at 6:30 (what? The Olympics weren’t calling, who cared if she skipped her morning workout sometimes?). If anything, Diya was sure she was more tired, but at this point she didn’t have much choice. She either had to get up and get ready, or get up and get back to the infirmary for a note to keep her out of class.

If there was class today. Was there going to be class today?

She couldn’t remember if anyone had mentioned that.

Diya felt like she was moving through molasses, changing from her pajamas into her clothes. She pulled on tights and a long-sleeved T-shirt before layering her uniform on top of that. Damn, this cold thing was getting real old, real fast.

She stumbled on the stairs out of the dorms once or twice, though never falling and setting herself on fire again. Diya was tired, just...really, really tired.

And really, really hungry.

By the time Diya reached the cafeteria, it was already buzzing with activity as students continued to compare notes over what had happened to them. Lots of people who had seemed to switch powers were paired up. Diya still had no idea which particular firebug she had traded with.

In line, Diya considered her breakfast options carefully. Her body was being weird, but she could handle it, she was in control. Maybe just a cup of oatmeal wasn’t going to cut it today, but she wasn’t going to go overboard.

Cup of oatmeal, 200 calories, for fiber. Half a banana sliced on top, 50 calories, for potassium. One hard boiled egg, 75 calories. Cholesterol content was high, but she needed protein and she wasn't about to reach for the bacon. Protein would give her more energy. Maybe she should have two?

No. One would be enough. It would have to be.

Diya found an empty seat and focused on her meal. She hated eating in the cafeteria this late. Half the school was here. She considered taking her tray back to her room, but honestly wasn’t sure if she was up to making the trek back without breakfast. She ate slowly, carefully, eyes focused on her tray. If she couldn’t see anyone watching her, then she could convince herself none of them were.

She could control this. Maybe not this new fire ability, or really much of anything else that was in her life, but the food on her tray? That she could definitely control.

If only her stomach would stop trying to convince her she was still hungry.

"Go see Ashley, Joe." Standing in the dim light of the bunker, the thirty-second Josephus Maximillian looked as exhausted as Louis Herrera felt. "And get some sleep; you're no good to us burnt out."

Mr. Max hadn't been still since the stranger had appeared in the theater, and he was by no means the only one among the faculty. There were just so many bases to cover and still so many left uncovered. How many times could they reassure confused, frightened victi-- students before one of them noticed that they were just as frightened as anyone else? Thus far shock was working in their favor, at least in that regard.

"I'm alright, Louis. The Western ward needs checking and the--"

"That wasn't a request," Herrera cut him off, steel in his voice and his gaze. "You haven't been checked out. You're going there now."

"Alright, I'm going." Max held up his hands in surrender. "Be sure to take some of your own advice. This army is going to need a strong commander in the next few..." He trailed off. Days? Weeks? Years? They were all promising to do whatever it took to get back to normal, but was normal even possible? There was so much no one understood about what had happened.

The same questions were etched in the tired lines of Louis' face when he broke the silence. "There are some calls I need to make and the final tally is on my desk. We have to do something for them, give them something to do for themselves."

Joe nodded and turned toward the infirmary. Under Louis' words, he heard the answer to the questions none of them were quite ready to speak out loud: For today, we do what we can.

Donovan Taffer

"Donovan Taffer's powers. Really? I had to get the suckiest--" We're really going down that road? What about Brook "Okay not the suckiest but they still suck pretty hard."

Faige was talking to her cousin, sitting on the steps outside the swimming pool building. "How are you doing anyway? Holding up okay?"

"Yeah.. I mean I freaked out when my gerbil said hi to me but it's actually been kinda cool.."

"You switched with Trevor?"

"Yeah that's what they're telling me. I like talking to animals better than regeneration anyway. How's Don taking it?"

"Meh.." Faige looked at her shoes again, then started fiddling with her gloves idly. "He's doing okay. I taught him how to fly at least but he still kinda sucks a it. I think he's just scared."

"Well you did kind of push him off the bleachers..." the younger girl said, twisting a strand of blonde around her fingertip idly.

"Lark was there to catch him! It was totally safe! Besides he didn't crash and die or anything so it's all good." Faige lifted her head, wrinkling her nose at Maddi. "You know what we gotta do now though right?"

"What...." Maddi's voice sounded suspicious.

Faige took a bottle of green hair dye out of her jacket, showing it to her cousin. "We need to put green dye in his shampoo."

"Why?"

"Well because! He can't properly be Fallout Boy with normal coloured hair and I know he's not gonna do the temp stuff readily like I do. If he's gonna borrow my good gloves and my flight suit he has to look the part." Faige nodded decisively.

"Faaaige..." Maddi said, starting to stand up. "This is a bad idea."

"Oh pssh you don't know how funny it'll be! Come on, Espy told me where his dorm room is and I think most people are at lunch... let's sneak up there."

"Faige... I am not gonna sneak in the boys dorms with you to put green dye in Donovan's shampoo.." Maddi crossed her arms.

"But I need a lookout! Come on... if you do I... I'll... I'll give you a pedicure."

"Serious?"

"Yeah, totes serious."

Maddi paused for a moment, then tossed her hair over her shoulder "Fine but if we get caught I'll give your diary to Roach Copeland!"

"You wouldn't dare."

"I will!"

"We won't get caught."

____________________________________________

The dorms were empty, just as Faige had suggested. The pair of girls crept into the boy's dorms armed with a bottle of semi-perminant green hair dye.

"Okay.." Faige whispered, pointing at a door "Espy said it was that one..."

Maddi nodded and walked over to the door, testing the handle. It was unlocked. Faige leaned to the side, peering in. She could see Adam's sleeping form in the dimly lit room and winced. "Crap... Adam's in there but he's sleeping. Maybe I can be quiet."

"We can still go back." Maddi whispered, tugging Fae's wrist.

"Naw I can do this... quick in and out. Since Adam is on that side that must mean..."

Faige trailed off as she slipped into the room, looking to the shelves and desk of the other side of the room. That had to be Donovan's side. Right there on the table was a bottle of Herbal Essence "Hello Hydration" . She held her hand over her mouth to not snicker, taking a few deep breaths to calm herself.

Picking up the bottle, which was about half full, she poured the shampoo into a plastic ziplock bag she had pulled from her pocket. Adam snorted and turned over... Faige froze, staring at him and Maddi winced at the door mouthing "hurry up!"

Nodding quickly, she poured the green dye into the shampoo bottle, then screwed the top back on and tiptoed back out. Maddi slowly closed the door and the pair ran for it, bursting into a fit of laughter halfway down the stairs.
This is my signature.

“I told you that you’d feel better after a swim.” There wasn’t the usual sarcastic heaviness to Lark’s voice. Instead it took on a teasing sing-song as she splashed water back at Cassandra. It was different. Not having that mantle of anger and doubt and fear around her and that heaviness; it was… safe. Lark felt honestly safe. Even though Lark usually seemed content enough around Cassandra today was different. She didn’t guard her smiles anymore. She didn’t prickle or snit.

Cass rolled her eyes some, splashing water back and deciding to let the comment just go for now rather than respond. But, it did feel nice. Like Lark was fond of reminding ad nauseum; she had been right about this. Swimming was like scratching an itch right at the small of your back or curling up into a warm blanket when it was a little too cold outside. The relief was superficial. It wasn’t nice because of anything Cassandra liked. It wasn’t her. It was Brodi and thoughts of Brodi needing to be sedated still lingered around in the back of her mind.

Cass let herself float in the water and look up at the ceiling.

“Since when do you wear a wetsuit, Lark?”

The other girl looked up from her splashing about at her name, wiping her hair out of her face.

“Since it became part of the school uniform for swimming. I hate how it looks though.” Lark made a face, ducking under the water and popping up a closer distance away. “Yours is much cuter.”

Cassandra gave a non-committal sort of shrug.

Powers or no, Lark didn’t need more than a moment of reading Cassandra’s face to know something was wrong. She quickly poured back through topics to figure out where she’d made a mistake and tested out her hunch by reaching over to tap Cass on the shoulder for attention. Cass flinched back away out of reflex, dropping back into the water.

Relief and guilt.

Somewhere out there Brodi was unconscious due to all of the input from people around him being forced into his brain. Cassandra’s voice didn’t have any tone at all when she explained it. Flat; matter-of-fact – there were a lot of people. He wore short sleeves and there were crowds. To someone else it might have sounded flippant but Lark knew better because somewhere out there someone was having everyone’s fears and doubts and rage forcing their way into their skin.

“The flowers I found were really cute.” Lark began hopefully. “I mean… I wasn’t really sure if boys do the flower thing, but… he knows it isn’t your fault. And I double checked to make sure the chocolates were vegan. And the stuffed dolphin is the adorbs. If they let deliveries come in from campus they’ll be there first thing in the morning bedside.”

“Where did you even find a dolphin?” Cassandra smiled a little; shifting back to treading water.

“See… this is why I’m going to be the best evil personal assistant ever when Syd snaps and starts to take over the world.”

“So you can send evil flowers to people?”

“Sinister daisies and wicked roses, wifey.”

Lark splashed Cassandra who splashed right back and the heavy weight of the conversation couldn’t seem to hold. Not in the face of just being around friends, just feeling safe and normal and happy. Somewhere out there two people were struggling with new powers, but, at the pool there were there were just two girls not having to worry for a change. No gloves in either the real or metaphysical sense.

And even with the lightness it gave neither was particularly sure that she wholly enjoyed it.

The lockdown was annoying. Lauren had to do her morning workout in the gym. What she really wanted to do was visit the skating rink, but that was impossible. She couldn’t go for a run outside, unless she was content to just run around the campus. No thanks. That left the gym.

To make matters worse, classes were cancelled for the day. What was she supposed to do stuck ono campus all day with no classes? It was frustrating.

Maybe a book? Lauren decided to try out the library. She had a book that she had working through, but every time she sat down to read, she was interrupted. She found a suitably cozy chair and settled in. A few chess club members had some games going to one side, but they were quiet.

For whatever reason, Lauren couldn’t stay comfortable. She found herself fidgeting and kept twisting in her chair to try a better position. From the corner of her eye, Lauren could catch glimpses of the chess players watching her. She couldn’t help but twitch every time one of them looked her way. Three pages! She hadn’t read more than three pages. One of the boys snickered and Lauren snapped her head in their direction to find Harper staring at her.

Harper? That wasn’t his name. It was something like that. His name started with an “H” certainly. For some reason, Lauren could never remember his name.

Whatever his name was, he was staring. As soon as Lauren looked, he turned away. Lauren wasn’t in the mood to call them out on whatever they found so amusing. She just closed her book and left, while the chuckles of obviously immature boys followed her to the door.

Strange looks and stares had been following her ever since last night. Lauren had noticed only a few then and not many more today, but some people, like Harper, were pretty obvious about it. Maybe word was out that she had lost her powers? Would people stare for that?

Maybe out in the garden somewhere there was a tree hoping for someone to sit under it.
