Beat the Heat

Post by MASH-1 » Fri Jul 08, 2011 10:55 am

In the midst of a brutal heat wave, ice cream sales were at an all-time high while pools were almost mythical, impossible to find at any department store. Yet today, a huge mass of people had gathered in Gemini Park around a stage that stood in the corner of the area. All brought together for a single cause. What started off as a small gathering had somehow evolved into a huge event. "Ladies and gentlemen! Thank you for coming down today!" The announcer called out to the crowd of people that had gathered in Gemini Park, "Now before we begin, I know our supporter would like to say a few things. So without further delay, it's my pleasure to introduce the one and only Chillzone." Reporters and civilians alike applauded as the blue skinned hero took to the podium, accompanied by the teenage heroine Nimbus Girl, his protege of sorts.

Chillzone, a mutant who's body was composed of organic ice, looked a little uncomfortable in the summer heat even though he was wearing his insulated costume to protect himself from the brunt of it. Still though, he smiled widely at the audience. A natural at talking with crowds, Chillzone was a media favourite of the hero cast and rarely turned down an interview or sound bite. It wasn't so much arrogance or glory seeking as it was a love of the community that he served and it showed with his interaction with the crowd. "I just want to say that I'm so glad to see so many people here coming out to support the Paragon Meta Children Services, a program that has helped hundreds of kids deal with dangerous powers and protect themselves and others while teaching them to use them to better the city and the world. A program I am proud to be a part of."

"Today, we hope to raise awareness for a growing issue. Every day, a kid is struggling to control their budding powers. Lives become at risk and property is damaged." Chillzone continued, putting his hands on either side of the podium and leaning forward to emphasize his point, "So when the PMCS came to me and asked what I could do to help, I was at a loss. I'm just a guy who makes a good snowcone, I told them. AC broken? Fridge on the fritz? These are problems I'm equipped to deal with." Chillzone grinned and paused as the audience laughed, "Which brings us to today."

Chill gestured up at the banner of the stage, with the words Summer Snowball Slugfest boldy printed across it, "Today, we beat the heat with a little taste of winter. With the help of my young sidekick here..."

"Partner." Nimbus piped up.

"Partner." Chillzone corrected himself immediately without missing a beat, bringing more laughs from the audience, "We'll be blanketing the park with beautiful winter goodness. All are welcome to join in the snow battle to end all snow battles, so choose your side carefully. One side will be led by me and the other by Nimbus here. Don't let her age fool you neither." Chill indicated the heroine, who smiled and waved cheerfully, "Those interested in making donations for the PMCS are more than welcome and we have stations set up around the area. Just look for the police officers who have kindly given up their off days to watch over this event." Chillzone pointed around the area, indicating just a few of the places donations could be made, "Donations aren't required to take part, but every little bit helps."

Nodding to Nimbus, who smiled in return, Chillzone spread his hands, "So, on behalf of the PMCS and myself, lets get this thing started, huh?" The crowd cheered their approval as both heroes lifted into the air and flew to opposite sides of the park. Almost immediately, the air cooled dramatically and huge fluffy flakes began to fall from the sky. Within minutes, the entire park was turned into a winter wonderland, the snow wet and easily packed. Perfect for snowball fights. Immediately, the crowd seperated as sides were picked and armies were formed.

Donovan looked out at the snowy park, debating on which side to choose. Part of him wanted to show solidarity with the teenager Nimbus, but he opted instead for Chillzone's side. After all, who better to work with in a massive snowball fight than a guy that can control ice and snow himself. Stopping off at a donation box first, he dropped a 10 dollar bill then made his way over to Chillzone's camp where people were already gathering snowballs. Donovan started helping some guys build up a snow fort while he looked out at the crowd to see if any other Westbrookers made it to the charity event.

Wyatt ran to follow Nimbus and laughed as snowflakes caught in his eyelashes and settled on his black tee. He was surprised at how quickly an accumulation built up, and by the time he had reached the far end of the park, he was trudging through snow past his ankles and getting deeper still.

Toward the center of the park he could see the crowd of children and adults, both normal and meta, picking sides and building forts. They were laughing and enjoying the novelty of a cold July day. So many happy people gathered in one place -- it was exhilerating.

Wyatt smiled and began making a pile of snowballs. He figured he should be able to launch one a good three-hundred feet, so long as he had a good line to his target. Now, if only certain of this schoolmates would show up...

There was no question as to which side Cadence was going to pick. She'd known Chillzone since when she'd first enrolled at Evolution-X. He'd been one of the few that had really got her to come out of her shell. Some of her fondest memories were Chill's movie nights...which generally consisted of titles such as The Brain That Ate Cleveland. Cady dropped her money into a donation box, then weaved through the crowd until she caught up to the icy hero.

"Hi Chill! You...probably don't remember me," she greeted enthusiastically. "Combustion Gal? Cadence...or...well...I mean, I go mostly by Cady now..."

She stopped short of hugging Chill. She remembered that heat and flame generally hurt him. Since her powers were pretty much everything an ice man should avoid, and since her normal body temperature was much higher than a normal person's, she felt it best not to go through with the hug.

"Anyway...I...just wanted to say hi. It's good to see you."

Lauren heard something about a “Snowballs in Summer” event, or something to that effect, and followed a couple of people to it out of curiosity. Christmas in July was one thing, but this was the first she heard of snowball fights in July north of the equator. It helped that it was for a worthy cause, but it also looked like a lot of people were gearing up for a great time.

She looked around and happened to spot Wyatt already working on a few snowballs. She tried to duck out of sight and make her way to the nearest group of people working on a fort. She took refuge behind them grinning to herself. As she peered around them, trying to see if Wyatt had spotted her, she readied a snowball. If she could just get close enough to him before he realized she was there...

Elissa had never seen snow, so she said. It wasn't entirely true; last winter had been nasty enough that people had been talking about the Blizzard of '93, which had been a couple years before she was born. But snow deep enough to actually make forts and have a full-on snowball war? She'd never seen it. Now she stood at the edge of the park, shivering just LOOKING at all that white. It looked fun, but...why did snow have to be so COLD?

Wyatt saw one of Nilesh's current posse over near the wrought-iron fence, closest to the gate to Perez Park. He scouted a little more until he saw Nilesh, looking across the park at Elissa (hey! Elissa was here too!), and loading a rock into a snowball. Wyatt had avoided Nilesh so far, having been warned by Roach that the guy would be trouble if they ever crossed paths, but there was no way Wyatt would let him hit his friend with a cheater snowball. Wyatt judged the distance and hoped that his balls were at least semi-aerodynamic, and then he launched. The snowball didn't hit his intended target, but instead hit a Nilesh-flunky who in turn stumbled backward into his leader. Nilesh turned on the guy and crushed the rock-loaded snowball on his head.

Elissa was safe for now, and was probably totally unaware she had been saved from certain doom. Wyatt smiled smugly to himself. Wyatt Wyborn -- Hurtproof -- Saviour of Beautiful Girls!

Suddenly a snowball caught him right in the teeth.

Lauren brought her hands up to her mouth with a wince. While she couldn't help but giggle a little bit, she didn't intend to hit Wyatt in the face. She waited for him to recover then offered a meek wave as a sort of apology. With retribution all but certain in her mind, she turned and fled to find cover.

Chillzone stared at Cadence for a moment, trying not to smile as he shot her a confused look, pretending not to remember her. Of course he did. When a moment of doubt crossed over her, Chill couldn't help but break into a grin.

"Of course I remember Cady." Chillzone replied, giving her shoulder a quick friendly squeeze, "How have..." Suddenly, he saw movement out of the corner of his eye. Instincts took over and he raised one hand, causing the snow in front of him to swell up and block the volley of snowballs coming at him and Cadence.

"Less talk, more fight old man!" Nimbus Girl called out from her side of the park, "Now let's see what you got!" The teenage weather controller lifted on hand towards Chillzone, causing a small but powerful dust devil to kick up, launching thick spats of snow out into the crowd, pelting anyone unlucky enough to be standing in the open.

Chuckling, Chillzone gave Cady a crooked grin, "We'll have to catch up later. I've got a sidekick that needs to be put in her place." His ice shield formed on his hand and he leaped over his snowmound, blocking the attack while forming a large snowball of his own.

Donovan ducked behind the fort wall as the rapid fire of snowballs hitting it sent plumes of powdery mist over him and the others that had taken shelter. As the assault ended, one of the other snuck a peek over the wall. "Chillzone's got Nimbus distracted. Let's get out there." The man called out and everyone scrambled to their feet, grabbing snowballs as they leaped over the wall and into the fray.

As Donovans foot hit the ground, it went out from underneath him, sending him slipping to the ground. Luckily, no one was near him so it was just Donovan that landed in a mass of legs and arms on the cold ground. "Smooth." Donovan muttered as he got to his feet, fixing his glasses. Just then, the world went white as a snowball caught him square in the face, causing him to slip and fall again.
