Broken

Sam had come to the school to get help with her power. Having nearly burnt her parents barn down when her powers first showed, her parents knew she'd need help to control her gift. It would be a danger to herself and others if she couldn't find a way to get a handle on them.
Westbrook, a school for metas. Supposed to be one of the best in the country. It was located in Paragon City, home of some of the country's top heroes. Also home to some of the biggest and baddest criminal groups in the country and beyond.
Sam had never been popular in school, her sister was, her sister was also gorgeous so that helped. Sam knew she'd never measure up to her sisters looks and that was fine to her. She was teased by some of the other girls, that ended after the first few school fights. They had still made fun of her just not where she could hear. This made her less popular with the boys, who wanted to date the crazy chick that could break into a fight at any moment.
She was fine with all of that, found her place in the world and though it wasn't great it was hers. All that changed the night of the fire. She was going to have to move, leave her home, her folks, her brothers and sister. Although she didn't always get along with them, they were her family and they'd be missed. A new school meant new kids and new issues and Sam wasn't looking forward to any of that. Would they be catty like the kids from her small town school. Or would big city kids be more tolerant? Hoping for the latter she was still prepared for the former.
Not only had the kids of Westbrook excepted her as one of theirs they were all friendly and she was happy to say she was fitting in. There was still the question of her powers, they still weren't working for her, but this issue seemed to be pushed to the back of her mind more and more as she was enjoying school.
Then the dance...She'd never been to one and the last one she had tried to go to was ruined by the fire. Would this one end up the same way? She wasn't planning on going but her roommate Raven wasn't going to let her miss out. Raven was great, she wanted to see the best in the world and everyone in it. She wanted everyone around her to be happy and she worked hard to make that happen. Seeing that Sam and Eric had been hanging out quite often in the week leading up to the dance Raven had made it clear that Sam should ask him to the dance. Agreeing, she had asked him out, he had other plans though. Mentioned wanting to go to the dance with another. Maybe skipping the dance wasn't a bad idea after all.
Raven had taken her shopping for a dress, there would be no getting out of the Dance. Raven was relentless and Eric had promised her at least one dance. What could it hurt right? Go as a single maybe not come back as one, that was the plan Raven had set out. It did sound like fun...now if only she knew how to dance. Chris was having the same issue as Sam, wanting to go to the dance but having no real idea how to dance. Raven solved both problems by teaching Chris and Sam how to dance at the same time. So she was ready, she had the dress, she had the moves, it was going to be a fun night.
Little did Sam know how fun. The Westbrook crew hit the floor and started to dance the night away. She was laughing and chatting as they all danced. Rumor was Eric hadn't asked anyone after all. Sam soon put this out of her mind though when the Michael Jackson song hit. It was time for Lorne to bust out his moves. He pulled off his stark white jacket and tossed it over Sam's head and hit the floor. It was a chilly night out and Sam took the opportunity to take the jacket and wrap it around her shoulders. She made sure Lorne knew he wasn't getting the jacket back till the night was over. He didn't mind, not only that but he actually asked Sam for the next slow dance. Agreeing with a smile she stepped up to him and wrapped her arms around him. They talked through not just one but two songs as they moved and swayed. When the music picked up the pace again Lorne had asked her if she wanted to grab a snack. There were small sandwiches and water bottles laid out for the kids. Grabbing a water bottle and sandwich she took a bite and nodded her thanks for Lorne. He stood eating his sandwich looking off into the distance where he saw lights. He'd asked Sam if she wanted to go investigate the lights and she had agreed. Walking together they made it to the pond, it had been decorated up with decorations for the dance but was off on it's own. Lorne had made some small talk until he finally found the courage to finally ask if it would be OK for him to put his arm around her. She had agreed, it felt good, warm. There looking at the beautiful pond, his arm around her he was asking about her life before the school. Talking about the things she missed about her home she was feeling emotional. They had finally made their way back in time for the last song. Another slow song, Lorne had taken no time in asking her to finish the night in his arms dancing. Sam thought it was a great way to end things. She was on cloud nine at the end of the dance.
The crew made their way to the arcade in the mall after the dance, an after party. Sam didn't want to wear her new dress to the arcade so went up to her room to get changed. When she got to her room she realized that she still had Lorne's jacket with her. She took it off and held it with a smile before hanging it up and getting changed. They had a good time at the arcade, Mia and Wyatt playing air hockey and the rest playing a round of 'extreme' Pac-Man that involved hitting each other with blown up boxing gloves while they tried to play Pac-Man. Raven had messed with Lorne using her powers, this made it her turn to get hit with the gloves. Lorne had both of the boppers and planed to give Raven a hard time. Sam had gone behind Lorne and pulled his arms behind his back to protect Raven. Lorne finally just pulled her up and put her up on his shoulder, in reality she didn't exactly fight all that hard. There were a lot of worse places she could find herself. The rest of the gang gave Sam and Lorne some room as they walked out of the mall. Lorne said he'd visit Sam during the weekend to grab his jacket. She was looking forward to seeing him again.
Natalia, that was the name of the new girl they were showing around. Sam had dragged Juan away from Syd. He was getting sprayed by some chemical and was looking like he wanted to hit Syd pretty hard in retaliation. They sat outside on some stumps and talked about everything and anything. Finally Juan had asked her to join him and get closer. She had turned him down though and let Juan know about her feelings for Lorne. Peyton had come along and heard some of what they were talking about. So Peyton and Juan had been told about her feelings. Sam didn't know if Lorne felt the same way but Peyton and Juan said she should find out and there was only one way to do that...ask.
Later that night there was an impromptu dance party. She ended up dancing with Lorne again when the talk of past girlfriends came up. This lead Lorne to tell Sam that she and he should talk. She lead him to her room. Walking in first she made her way to where his jacket sat on a the desk chair. She picked up the jacket and held it to her chest as they talked. Lorne had closed the door and looked at her. It took a while but they finally got around to it...it wasn't going to work. Lorne didn't want to get hurt, he didn't want to hurt her either. There it was, that was the end of it before it even started. She didn't even know what to do, she finally handed him his jacket back and he took it leaving her alone in her room. Her powers had kicked in again that night. But this time it was ice, all over. By the time Raven got to the room there was a fine layer of frost all over everything in the room. Emotions, this was the key Raven said. Her powers where tied to her emotions, or that was the theory anyway.
Sam shook her head at the memories as they flooded her head. Broken, that's what came to mind when she thought about it all, she was broken. Something was wrong with her, she couldn't even get her powers to be of use. She looked around the Vault, standing in the middle of the large metal box and looked down at her hands. What was wrong with her, why did everyone else make it look so simple. Everyone was hooking up, heck her roommate Raven had started seeing Eric, the kid she had asked to the dance. Juan was hanging out with Natalia the new girl. She couldn't fault him, it was Juan after all and even though he did say he'd wait for Sam as she wasn't ready to jump into a relationship she should have just known better.
She closed her eyes, she wanted to scream. It all started so well and it was all falling apart. Everything was becoming a mess. That's when she felt it, the temperature in the room had started to rise. Slowly at first but it didn't take long till it was drastically climbing. That's when the first fire started. In the corner. A flash then a small fire. To her left another, this time bigger. Another bright flash and a blaze kicked up. She had to move away from it the heat was intense. She blinked and almost fell back as the next gout of flame kicked up in front of her. Each blaze was bigger, and hotter then the one before it. Finally the whole wall in front of her was consumed by a wall of fire. Sam had to back herself up until her hands touched the back wall. The metal had burnt her hands as they touched it. She turned around, she had nowhere else to go, the room was slowly filling with fire and smoke. She started to cough and wondered how she'd ever get out of the Vault.
Finally the fire suppression system kicked in and started to put all the fires out. She stood panting, hair plastered to her face with sweat. Sam must have looked terrible. She made her way to the door, she had to put her sleeve over her hand to open the door because of the temperature. She stepped out and past the kids that had gathered by the door. She was breathing heavily and covered in sweat and soot as she passed everyone, she wasn't in the mood to talk.
She shook her head as she flopped into her bed. She put her hands on her face and closed her eyes.
“I'm broken and everyone knows it.”
