Westbrook’s academic program offers students a strong foundation in the arts, humanities, sciences, and mathematics.
A priority of the academic program at Westbrook is incorporating a metahuman perspective in courses whenever possible. Some courses are entirely dedicated to metahuman themes, such as Introduction to Fire Abilities and Metahuman History. However, students can be expected to find a metahuman perspective even in many of the more traditional courses. To give a few examples:
- Biology incorporates a discussion of metahuman evolution as part of the lessons on evolution.
- Organic Chemistry provides a survey of some of the common organic compounds generated by metahumans to support common abilities.
- The English courses incorporate several works of metahuman literature among the required readings.
- Art History covers the works of important metahuman artists in the 20th and 21st centuries.
- Ethics includes discussions of the ethics of using various metahuman abilities in various challenging scenarios.
Students are encouraged to take a metahuman-related course each semester as part of their ongoing education. These courses can cover a general metahuman topic, or they can be something directly relevant to the student’s own metahuman abilities. For example, students with healing abilities often take Human Anatomy and Physiology and Introduction to Medicine.
Class Size and Course Availability
Year-long courses are available every year and typically have class sizes of about 15 to 20 students in the classroom.
Trimester courses vary in availability. Most courses are offered at least once a year, though the most popular courses are offered every trimester. Trimester courses generally have 5 to 15 students in the classroom. If not enough students sign up for a course, it may be converted to an independent study or deferred to the following trimester.
